Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Overwhelmed

I remember 11 years ago vividly. It was a Tuesday and my first class was at 8:00 a.m. Students arrived with stunned, shocked looks on their faces. It seems like a million years ago and it seems like just yesterday. It's definitely a point of no return on the calendar. We'll never be the same.

I arrived home today just exhausted. The air is hot and muggy. The electric company (Edison) has had our power turned off all day as they work in our neighborhood upgrading their equipment. So we sat outside as the evening began to cool and a mild breeze was welcomed.

Later in the evening I was stunned and devastated as I read the email of my friend Becky, a single mom, and learned that her youngest daughter has had to drop out of her sophomore year of college because her financial aid did not arrive. She is a topnotch student. Her mom wrote, "She just needs to work full time until spring so that doesn't happen again. She went from Fin Aid to the library to drop the classes and now she's out pounding the pavement [looking for a job]."

At 8:00 p.m. I headed upstairs to crawl in bed. I knew my pillow would be a soft landing after what seemed like a hard day.

Good night from Southern California.
