Snail

I wen for a walk this afternoon after it had rained. I spotted this large snail. I don't see them very often. I have tired to work out the specific type but with no luck. Someone told me a while ago that they are edible snails and were originally imported by the Romans. As they dont travel very far under their own steam it means that there used to be a Roman settlement somewhere nearby. 

My extra photo today is of another snail I saw a little later. Much smaller and more of the regular home grown type.
