Looking Through to Ruby Island

We have had fog hanging around all morning, it is just starting to clear.  I took this photo first thing this morning by our famous tree.  I went to town to do the grocery shopping, and am now about to head off to school to collect little 'h', take her to jazz dancing, then home to Luggate for a family meal.

The first extra photo was taken at the Jetty.  Not a mountain to be seen!

Year 1919


NZ women were eligible to stand for Parliament for the first time.  It wasn't until 1933 that the first woman was elected as an M.P.


Famous New Zealanders born in 1919:


Edmund Hillary, first man to climb Mt Everest in 1953.  I was at secondary school, and we went to 'The Embassy movie theatre to hear him talk of his experiences.  He died in 2008.  His photo features on the NZ $5 note.  (Extra 2).  The top $5 is the old note, the bottom one is the new one, that has just come into circulation.


Les Munro, was a volunteer for the secretive British 617 Dambusters Squadron formed in 1943,.  He was the last surviving pilot.  He died in 2015, aged 96.  We never went to movies when we were young, but we certainly went to see the Dambuster movie.


The Treaty of Versailles was signed in Paris, officially bringing an end to the first world war.  It was signed on 28th June 1919, exactly 5 years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.  Extra photo is of Versailles, which I took when I visited there in 1994.
