In My Woodland Garden ...

... I now have a new fern, Bechnum spicant, deer fern. I saw it at Damhead Nurseries on Sunday and knew it was one I didn't have.

It transpires that it has two sorts of fronds: a tall fertile set in the centre which die back in autumn, and a shorter sterile set outside which are evergreen.

I now realise it's going to grow to 3' tall so I might just choose a position further back from where I have stood the pot!
