'Armless fun
The term 'second hand' took on a whole new meaning at the car boot sale I went to this morning - as did 'melons'
If you yearn for pre-loved cuddly toys and baby clothes this is the perfect place to spend a Saturday morning.
I don't. I was looking for some small items of furniture for a project I have in mind, there were none.
I am a people watcher, a rubber-necker. I am also an eaves-dropper, an earwigger, an ear-whore even,(urban slang, apparently). I feed on snippets of overheard conversations, so even if there is nothing to buy, the local car boot sale is a perfect venue for me. The melting pot of cultures that Hemel Hempstead has become recently is fascinating.
Observed and overheard this morning:
Woman: Rummaging in a bucket of pieces of lace and ribbon: "Too small. Too small"
Old school seller: "Too small?"
Woman: "Too small"
Old school seller: "Choose a bigger piece"
Woman, holding up a length of lace: "Too small. Too small."
Old school seller: "There are plenty of other larger pieces."
Woman: "Small, small."
Old school seller: "Sorry madam, this isn't Debenhams"
Then there's my mum, whose linguistic skills seem to becoming more and more erratic. I take her paper to her on a Saturday. We shared a coffee and had a pretty intellectual conversation about the situation in Afghanistan, I took the dogs for a walk and on my return she was sitting in the garden:
"I'm watching the sky things" she said pointing upwards.
"Ah, yes, Red Kites"
