My take

Curiosity satisfied

I read an article on film vs digital by Ken Rockwell a while back, extolling film over digital. Apparently when you work out the pixel density for a film negative or slide it's far higher than you can achieve with digital cameras.

Anyway, I was curious enough that I thought I'd try an experiment. I bought a 6cm medium format film camera (a Bronica SQ-A, so a pretty respectable machine) to try out big negatives, and I had it scanned at high resolution by one of the professional labs, with the idea of comparing it with the results from my digital Fuji camera.

The results? The film results are pleasing. This image was taken using Provia reversal film, 1/250 at f2.8. Actually, for grainy black and white, which I also tried out, the pictures are really great, and have a definite "filmic" quality - but for resolution, colour rendition and quality of bokeh the digital camera beats film hands down. The extra was a picture taken at the same time using Provia simulation on a Fuji X-T1. Sorry Mr Rockwell, but fire all the pixel stats you want at me, my take is digital from now on. Leaving aside the simple quality differences the faff of having to meter manually, focus manually, change films every 12 pictures (!!), remembering to pull that stupid dark slide out for every shot, not to mention having to carry two house bricks of weight hanging round my neck, means that the Bronica will probably find a new home soon. My curiosity is satisfied.
