Stobo Kirk

Preaching today in the congregations of Tweedsmuir and Stobo.  This is Stobo Kirk, an ancient foundation which traces its origin to the 6th century.   This building, however, has 12th century and 15th and 16th century features.

Extras:   The porch at Stobo was added in the 15/16th century. After the disastrous Battle of Flodden, parishioners had to undertake archery practice each week after church.   You can still see the marks on the stone work where they sharpened their arrows.

And secondly to keep the balance - Tweedsmuir Kirk. built in 1874.  The churchyard dates back to the first church of the 17th century and contains table-stone graves of the 18th century and several other stones of interest, including a Covenanter's grave and one, near the gate, to the many men who died in the construction of the Talla reservoir.
