Green, green grass of Western Equatoria
Twenty seconds out of the Yambio airstrip and this is the view. Lush, empty and green with only traces of human habitation. It remains like this through the journey to Juba, become gradually browner as we move towards the more arid east.
I like how the deeper green snakes through the middle of the shot; a stream trying to burst through the vegetation that will succeed before the wet season ends.
Yambio town seemed quieter than a normal Monday morning, I remarked to Bennett. He said last night a Darfurian doctor working at the state hospital was shot and killed through the window of his house. Various theories abound, including in Juba where it made the news. Jealousy from someone who wanted his job, local dislike for northern Sudanese, revenge for infecting someone during a blood transfusion. The true motive or perpetrator may never be known.
Bennett visited this doctor last week as he wanted a tuberculosis test, which came back negative. I have told him that any lung problems are likely to be because he's smoking 60+ a day. I've been passively inhaling 55.
