Bye bye VHS
Unlike yesterday, which was glorious (a last hurrah?), today has been decidedly damp and autumn like. Which was useful, since I'd designated today a house cleaning marathon - the house hasn't been cleaned in two months (well I was away!) so some serious elbow grease was required.
Lounge and kitchen done in short order, no messing. On to the bathroom *sigh* - fixed the toilet seat (again), tried to fit a new handle to the toilet but of course nothing's standard in this house so it wouldn't fit - and I broke the old one, so now the toilet doesn't flush without a good deal of effort. The bath looks like there's been an open fire next to it and the embers have jumped across and burnt it, the sink's disproportionately tiny and the floor tiles are coming up. In short, the whole room is a tired, grubby mess. So next weekend I shall be discussing with my brother how one goes about getting a new bathroom done!
The dumping ground that is my bedroom also took a while - I've got a carpet you know! It needs replacing too... I also found my old VHS video recorder. When VCRs first came out, there was VHS and Betamax. My dad went with Betamax because the recording quality was (allegedly) better and we had 4 channels to watch so why would we need to rent videos?? It was a monster of a machine, with a spring loaded top where you inserted the video, which could've taken a finger off if you weren't careful. We used to put a tea towel over the front when we went out so any would be burglars wouldn't see the illuminated clock display...
Anyway, mine is slightly more modern but still, these are the only two videos I still own. And the bit where Mr Darcy emerges dripping from the lake is wearing thin ;-) So I shall replace them with dvds, and my VCR will follow my walkman and my 10 ton "portable" tv to electronics heaven.
