Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2017 Thursday -- "For Sale"

We did it! We met the realtor and two of his team today at our lovely home, the place that we long ago named "The Edge of Forever." Honestly, we never thought we'd sell this place. We also never thought we'd own a home on California's Central Coast.

We realize now that this home is entirely too big for the two of us to live during our senior days.

Getting this place tidy and uncluttered has been one serious endeavor. We've looked at each other a lot recently and have said, "We never throw away anything." Mr. Fun says that's why we own four houses. As we have moved from one home to another, we just keep them and turned them into rentals. Well actually, we purchased one little home for our daughter & son-in-law 25 years ago from our attorney friend Dave and his wife. We never lived in it. Then 4 1/2 years ago we purchased our retirement home.

Having rentals has been overall good, but occasionally as owners we've had to have nerves of steel to get through a difficult moment or situation -- which we've had recently. Both of our rentals are now without tenants. One, the tenant was evicted after several months of not paying rent. The other house, we gave the tenant the 60 day notice required by law; they had rented the house for 15 years. Once we got to see the properties we have realized both homes are/were in desperate condition, which is something that should not have happened due to the fact that we do use a property manager (which will be fired once these properties are refurbished). We are going to sell one of the rentals and once we sell this home, we'll move back to our former home until I retire from teaching (which will happen soon).

This property aspect of our lives has been an education, to say the least; now the education continues as we move toward our first experience of selling a home.
