The Mercat Cross of Peebles

There has been a Mercat Cross here for 500 years, though it was only put in its present position in 1895 (with a slight adjustment in the 1960's)

The official website of Peebles says:
 
Here the public market was held, the Town Drummer announced royal and other proclamations to the people of the Burgh and criminals were punished. This tradition is carried on in the Beltane Festival. 


I don't think so!   I have seen bits of the annual Festival over the last four years - and never yet have I seen a criminal flogged - or worse!
