Normandy Road Trip Day 8!!
A day of contrasting halves… A sombre morning travelling west along the coast from Port en Bessin, stopping off at memorials on Omaha Beach, the Normandy American Cemetery , and the Pointe du Hoc, learning about the heavy losses suffered on D Day on the 6th June 1945…
Arriving in Grandcamp-Maisy, the sun appeared and moods lightened, so time for a spot of people watching at a harbour-side café. After such a busy week, we decided to then head straight to our final campsite at Bayeux for a quiet afternoon before following the riverside footpath into town for the evening.
And what a lovely evening it was, the perfect way to round off our road trip: dinner in the evening sun at a pavement restaurant, a Bastille weekend rock concert in the town square, and once the sun had set, a son et lumière show, “The Lights of Liberty”. 360 degree video mapping lit up the trunk and branches of the Tree of Liberty of Bayeux, at the centre of the Place de la Liberté in the heart of the medieval city, alongside the cathedral which was adorned with a thousand colours, right to the tip of its highest point, the Lantern Tower…
This gives you just a small taste of the amazing half hour sound and light show: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GEFPag8AYd4
(Penultimate backblip, hope to be able to post the final roadtrip backblip later this evening... And I hope to resume normal blip service from tomorrow!)
