One for the memories

Sometimes the Scottish Highlands can be a bit special. More than normal.

Today was one of those days. It started with a two hour family sea kayaking session on Loch Shieldaig in some windy conditions to paddle round Shieldaig Island and spot the sea eagles, followed by some seals then a swim. All well supervised by Tom from Shieldaig Adventures who provided excellent guidance and security. A thoroughly good bloke.

After lunch, we headed west for a few miles to the tiny hamlet of Kenmore and the Applecross Smokehouse for some smoked salmon, brie and cheddar.

Back to the house and then off to Coulags for a late afternoon run up a Corbett I've had my eyes on for decades - An Ruadh Stac - aptly named Red Steep Hill in Gaelic. Sadly, the approach is now marred by some fairly intrusive hydro scheme development, with the glen scarred by a huge gravel vehicle track running parallel to the footpath which is separated by metal barriers, the kind you'd see at the London Marathon. Fortunately I forgot all about that as I clambered up the red steep hill in 90minutes from the car. The quartzite slabs were like an angled pavement to the summit.

I wish I had some extras on Blip, I took so many photos today. I'll settle with this one of the Munro of Maol Chean Dearg with the background of Liathach.
