Treading the Boards

Yesterday I showed the room we are training TaiChi in, a beautiful old hall, and I specially mentioned the floor. Today's blip shows that floor. So what is special?
When the floor was laid, in the 1800's, there was no shortage of old, large diameter, trees, so a quality floor was made of floorboards that were very broad and relatively thick.  You can still get boards like that today but they cost a fortune because in forests grown as a crop trees no longer grow to this diameter.
The other special thing about this floor is the colour. Over the years it has been sanded, varnished, and polished many times and it has become a warm shade of honey!
Finally, all that work on the floor has left it  very smooth, with no spaces between the boards, no splintery bits, and even where a knot has dried and fallen out the resulting hole has been filled and smoothed.
My feet are there mainly to provide scale but they are in one of the TaiChi stances.
Here's hoping this wonderful room lasts another century or two!
