The Horticulture Class

This is the garden at the Centre for Learning.
The teachers do classes on growing food each Saturday morning, with the girls.

Prominence, Centre left, took this class on Double Digging system we use and then do a bio-intensive planting system, having first sown the seeds in potting trays in the greenhouse.

The system enables roots to grow through the hard soil untouched by the hoes they use. We continue to use the same beds without re-digging for four years, by just loosening with big forks.

This close planting keeps the moisture in, prevents weeds from growing and prevents the hot sun from killing the micro-organisms which allis with soil structure improvement.

The mulch used here are tephrosia leaves which add nitrogen.
