Devil's Punchbowl
Today's forecast was not encouraging, and having awoken late this morning I decided not to roam too far.
The National Trust Cafe at Hindhead next to the Devil's Punchbowl seemed a good choice, followed up by a stroll around this iconic viewpoint.
Seven years ago the A3 London to Portsmouth trunk road was diverted through a tunnel, allowing this area to be returned to nature. The trackway to the left in the image is the old A3, originally built in 1826 as a gentler route for horse drawn vehicles. The one on the right is the part of the earlier route over the hill.
Eventually the promised rain became persistent, so I headed back to the cafe for another coffee before heading home
