IMHO
Off to London to meet up with EmiLance and Jen and Rob.Just over a year ago I got Annie Liebowitz Book 'A Photographer's Life' and was blown away . Today I got the chance to see the Ehibition at Natinal Portrait Gallery.
A lot of Leiebowitz Commercial work is so iconic and ubiquitous it's easy to become dismissive and I really went to see the family stuff, however I was blown away all over again the portrait of Leoarndo Di Caprio which I had thought Ok that's quite good, a bit obvious, a litle bit cliched, was, in the flesh just so different to my expectations ... the focus was just in front of the actor so everthing was softly blurred everso cleverly out of focus ... it was magical ...
Many portraits demonstrated so much more technical stuff impressively so ... and yet the family photos non of which were blown up remain for me just so good...
The exhibition was laid out remakably well and as Jen said t was great for example to see the photo of Susan Sontag being flown back home in a jet dying of cancer followed by a back to work picture .
There was a 'matter-of-factness about it all which I adore, the 'this is how it is approach'not stroking anything up for any emotional effect yet being able to say it all anyway ..INMHO The woman's a genius.
Exhibition too crowded what's the point of timed tickets if you are going to make the viewing dificult?
Onwards to the Portrait Competition where the girl with the bag on her head got Emily hopping mad since she had done a similar one a few years back ... which she has, and I have a bad copy of it on my sideboard
Then to Lunch... the above is the point and order system ..Emily . Rob and A tiny bit of jen...Lance too busy putting 4 sugars in his tea..
then to The photographers Gallery excellent exhibition Soho Nights and in it's brilliant photography book shop me and Em bought ourselves a bargain Holga cameras hers being pink and mine being GOLD (I thought of smithski as I bought it)
Then met up with Ed and Sarah and went to the pub and the staggered to the Thai resturant and then goodbyes and then home and fall into bed by 11.30
such a blissful day and even Shy enjoyed himself ;)
