Public
Hanging out with the public art at the end of the platform in Barnsley. The sculpture and I seemed to be the only ones wanting to catch a train.
I was making my way to Wombwell for what will probably be my last pre-season friendly of the summer, given that the season kicks off properly this weekend. Wombwell Main FC of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior League (Level 11 of the Pyramid) were hosting near neighbours Penistone Church of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division (Level 9). By some quirk of scheduling this was the third time that I've watched Penistone since April, most recently in the NCEL Cup Final at Bramall Lane.
It was billed as a first-team friendly, but both teams seemed to have a lot of youngsters on show (extra). The game was close, but Wombwell scored the only goal through a second-half penalty.
This was probably a bit of a trek to make for a match of this nature, particularly as it was an after work evening run rather than a full day exploring the neighbourhood. Still, I returned via the Penistone Line over to Huddersfield which was my first experience of that route. Emley Moor Mast was looking more impressive than ever from relatively up close. I saw enough to make we want to come back and spend more time down here at some point - indeed I've yet to visit Penistone's home ground so that will be on the bucket list for the next season or two.
