Global footprint
This bunch of Peruvian lilies bought this morning for £4 from the local supermarket are reckoned to be the best cut flowers to buy because they last so long and are reasonably cheap.
Then I checked the country of origin: Colombia.
It didn’t take long to do the maths: each bloom cost 80p and it had been transported almost half way across the world from South America.
So what did the workers who picked them to get paid?
And what was the global footprint of these flowers?
Is this not globalization gone mad.
Anyway, why are we importing these flowers when they can grow in this country in temperatures down to -5C?
