Skenfrith

This morning we went to the Nelson museum in Monmouth. Nelson had no connection to the town other than visiting it three times in late 1700s/early 1800s.

"The Nelson collection was a bequest to the town of Monmouth upon the 1923 death of Lady Georgiana Llangattock, wife of local landowner and town benefactor, John Rolls, 1st Baron Llangattock and mother of Charles Rolls, who had amassed the collection of Nelson memorabilia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries." Charles being the Rolls of Rolls Royce fame. An early aviation and motoring pioneer; his statue stands outside the town hall.

The collection is very large and very impressive.

After lunch we went to Skenfrith Castle in ermm... Skenfrith. Only five miles from Monmouth, one of a trio of defenses built in the area, the other two being White and Grosmont Castles. Originating in the distant past, 1065, this picture is my submission for today's Mono Monday hosted by TheAphid theme Distant.
