Reading Museum

A nice warm and sunny day in the heart of Berkshire. I decided to take the train to Reading, the journey takes about five minutes. A wander around the town took me to the Reading Museum, despite having been there several times previously. The Museum is shown top left. Reading is not a particularly attractive town, an example of urban planning gone wrong. However the Museum is quite interesting, in particular the Bayeux Tapestry exhibit.

On the top floor of the Museum there is a gallery devoted to the Roman town of Calleva. This was a few miles from Reading, and has never been built upon, so extensive excavation has been possible. Surprisingly the site itself is farmland, I would have thought it might be worth more as a visitor attraction.

At the entrance to the Calleva gallery there are a couple of mosaics on the wall, both are surprisingly complete. Originally they would have formed the floor of fairly luxurious rooms. I have included one of them as the background to the two smaller photographs.

Bottom right is a photograph of a Reading classroom. I do not remember what year the the classroom is supposed to represent maybe around 1930s, though I think it would not have looked much different in the 1950s.
