Death in the valley with no name
I've always liked the fact that the valley of the Gill Beck between Baildon and Hawksworth is apparently nameless. Gillbeckdale it should be I suppose. However, namelessness rather adds to its mystique and general air of forgotten-ness.
On this afternoon's lap of the valley last week's flush of fungi has subsided gradually: plenty of slightly middle-aged boletes and Leccinums and lurid Larch Boletes remain. One family of positively obese macrosporus mushrooms have let themselves go shamelessly.
This pristine Amanita nestled innocently amongst the grass under young oaks on the south-facing side above Tong Park. The top of the basal bulb or volva has come away as I parted the grass. It will be interesting to see if she stays so beautifully pallid as she matures: really white forms of A. phalloides are purportedly very uncommon. They're also very hard to photograph well in bright sunlight. The cap is bleached out but, in life, has fine radiating fibrils.
