Bowder Stone
Today Mum went rock climbing. Here she is at the top of the Borrowdale Bowder Stone, partly obscured by the tree.
This stone first became a Lake District attraction at the turn of the 19th century, when the ladder was erected and tourists could climb the 30 odd feet to the top. It has been estimated to weigh 2,000 tons and balances improbably on one edge. There is debate as to whether this is a giant erratic, left behind when the glaciers retreated, or whether it has fallen from the crags above. I think the former is more romantic.
