Diary of an Edinburgher

Holidays Day Two

A very leisurely start to the day, with tea in bed, along with a visit by Big Archie, who takes up rather a lot of room.

The weather forecast wasn't too promising, and it was overcast all day, but dry, and warm(ish). Having forgotten to bring a coat from home, a borrowed one from Christine ensured that it didn't rain.

We popped to a nearby cafe for cake and coffee, then Christine took the dogs back to spend the day at the cottage, which Archie preferred. We set off, dog-less, on a jaunt and such a lovely area it is (we're very familiar with it) - LUSH is the word. Bright green trees and hills, mirror lochs, fast flowing rivers, wee sleepy old towns.

We stopped for a coffee in a rather nice cafe we'd in been years ago. There was a Kiwi waiter, so I had high hopes that my 'flat white' would be a good one (Kiwis invented them). But it was not. Cup too large, so the coffee was weak with too much froth. I drank it, but told him it was a 'Scottish flat white - not a Kiwi flat white’ to which he replied, 'Thanks'. I had to explain that it was not, in fact, a compliment.

Back home in time for a gin tasting and nibbles. The two Archies had spent the day in and out of the river, and in fact, Wee Archie was not to be seen for ages when we arrived - he was off exploring, and came charging back and ran round and round, full of the joys of life.

Dogs and people are now all well fed, the dogs are sleeping peacefully, the humans are engrossed in their iPads. A crossword was attempted and, despite the aid of another gin, we gave up rather easily and consulted the answers. We're not proud.
