On the way home we visited the magnificent Holehird gardens which are maintained by volunteers from The Lakeland Horticultural Society.   There were so many potential blips and it was hard to choose the best.  This shows the little stream cascade looking towards the misty Langdale Pikes and Lakeland Fells.  I was very impressed by the fantastic display over 200 varieties of hydrangeas with a glimpse of Lake Windermere in the distance (extra).  The National Collection of pink, red and white Astilbes and Daboecia, the summer-flowering heathers, Daboecia, were very colourful too and the walled garden was a mass of colour.
Before going to the gardens we had diverted to Arnside overlooking the tranquil waters of the Kent estuary but the water is treacherous and hides quicksands and everchanging channels. As we were walking along the beach passing the Coastguard’s place we were warned to cover our ears as the warning siren was due to go off.  It loudly indicated that the Arnside Bore was about to begin and then with a rushing sound, the bore wave quickly approached transforming the calm water at a speed that it would be almost impossible to run (extra).  Even a few metres from the water edge, people have become trapped in the quicksand and since May 2009 the local coastguards have rescued 403 people sucked in by the quicksand or caught by the fast moving tide.
