Phase two

This is the BA maintenance hanger at Heathrow airport. I have 'blipped' this building before when, to the right of this photograph, they were altering the roof to make room for the new A380 when it comes in for service or repair.

This is now phase two, where they are making room for a second plane.

Some interesting facts. The original building which ended at the concrete archway seen inside this shot, was built in 1954 and was one of the largest concrete spanned building of its time. It is a protected building and therefore cannot be altered externally although major internal alterations are taking place at the moment.

The building was extended in the '80's to the size it is now to accommodate the larger aircraft in use, including the 747's and 777's.

The extension to the roof is to allow the tail-fin of the A 380 to enter.

The other side of building is being altered to house BA's 17 flight simulators which are being moved from the Cranebank training centre.
