Berry choice

It’s been a good summer for berries and I have been making the most of it — fruit and particularly mixed berries of all sorts, most days over the past few weeks.
Strawberries have been, and still are plentiful on the market and in the supermarkets and relatively inexpensive, and much the same with raspberries and blueberries.
But that’s nothing like the inimitable blackberry, now ripening in profusion in hedgerows. What;’s more they are absolutely free and there simply for the pucking. I walked round the village recreation ground today and could have picked sufficient to produce all manner of berry inspired dishes.
As it happened I wanted no more than a handful as an addition to a bowl of other mixed berries.
Oh. We’ve  had a plentiful supply of tiny but very sweet wild strawberries in the garden.  And raspberry bushes in pots as well as blue berries, although we have had to share them with blackbirds, and I know the blackbirds had the greater share.
But blackberries — that’s altogether another story.  We’ve had those in the garden as well, but after having the hedge trimmed, almost all have been caught up by the hedge trimmer.
As I soon discovered, no worries.  Just cross the road to the recreation ground where bunches of them are growing in abundance.

Call this a contribution to my five a day.  Both fresh and completely free into the bargain!
