Kildwick Hall
This afternoon we found ourselves in the village of Kildwick - between Keighley & Skipton.
This is Kildwick Hall - a Grade II* building built around 1640. Up until the mid 20th century it was the residence for the Lords of the Manor of Kildwick. Since the middle of the 20th century it has had a rather chequered history. It has passed through many hands, with attempts to run it as a hotel, a Country Club and a restaurant all failing, before it was returned to being a family home once more in the 1990s.
In the early 1970s it was taken over by the owners of the famous Box Tree restaurant in Ilkley and was an Egon Ronay 'Restaurant of the Year'. (Me & Mrs MD having dined at the restaurant on a number of occasions).
Later it was run as a high class restaurant by a Frenchman, but it lasted only 12 months. He left claiming Yorkshiremen did not appreciate French food and were too tight-fisted (we never patronised it during this time - maybe he had a point)
It has also featured in many films and tv series that had a Bronte connection.
It was for sale in 2013 with a guide price of £1.85m - I'm afraid I don't know what after that.
