Red-legged Shield Bug

This fabulous bug was minding his own business on my veranda until I decided it was time for a photo-shoot. I transferred him onto a bright green conifer as a suitable contrasting backdrop, but he wasn't having any of it, and strode back to his chosen spot.

His orange legs are striking, as are his square shoulders, which set him apart from other shieldbugs. This species (Pentatoma rufipes) is found throughout Europe in forests, woodlands, orchards and gardens, feeding on the sap of oaks and other trees.
