Hiking in the Goyt Valley

Saturday
Today, Janet, John, Roger, Jen and I enjoyed a lovely drive to the Goyt Valley in the Peak District, and went for a beautiful walk around a reservoir, with glorious views of heather-covered slopes all around us. We stopped for a snack at this scenic spot, looking down the narrow valley to the packhorse bridge. In the past, before the trains, packhorses were used to transport salt from Cheshire, across to Goyt Valley, through Buxton, to Sheffield and Chesterfield. This particular bridge would have been drowned when the reservoir was flooded, so they dismantled it and moved it upstream. Returning along the far side of the reservoir, we encountered a rather boggy patch, and we had to make a few little detours, but I still ended up with one very muddy trainer! Having finished our walk, we then drove into Buxton, and went for a walk through the park, stopping for some ice cream/cake along the way. In the evening, we picked up Bernard and went out for a very nice dinner.
