Howden Minster
Totally distracted from today's mission. We were heading for Bishop Burton close to Beverley to do some investigation into the estates of The Watt family (owners of Speke Hall). As usual we headed off on the scenic route and took every detour in the book to find the previously unseen. Wow we certainly hit the jackpot today. Apologies to those who have blipped it previously, but Howden Minster (close to Hull) was absolutely stunning, as was the town.
There was known to be an Anglo Saxon church at Howden which belonged to The Abbey of Peterborough. It was considered quite remote but very wealthy. A college of priests was established in 1264. The bulk of the surviving fabric belongs to the period 1265 - 1330.
The chapter house finally fell into ruin in 1750. The Grammar school was established in 1265 teaching mainly Latin and Song. The present 2 school rooms date from Tudor Times and were in use until 1925.
One of the extras shows sculptures devised to represent "The Four Elements" as part of a 2002 regeneration scheme. (John Maine RA). A stunning site that should go on everyone's to visit list.
