Hanging On . . .
Today, Jools and I head out on an expedition to find the Hole In The Wall, a series of fissures, crevices and cliffs on the Bruce Trail at Limehouse, just a couple of miles from home.
First time, we took the wrong turning, got lost, and a 1-hour hike stretched into 3 hours and four very sore feet. Second time out, we saw lots of other things but couldn't find the bloody Hole. This time, we were wiser and checked the path on a very large map at the entrance to the conservation area and found it in 10 mins. Hmm . . .
The ever-sensible Jools led the way, assuming - correctly, I think - that I'd probably stumble over the edge of one of the crevices or plunge over a cliff. However, we decided not to clamber down the ladder into the caves which give Hole its name, just in case there were any large animals or other nasties lurking in the shadows. Next time . . .
The huge maple trees on edge of the cliffs are astonishing, clutching grimly to the limestone at the edge of the sheer cliffs. I think Jools would be just as tenacious if she got that close to the edge; wouldn't happen to me, of course, I prefer to stand in the background taking pictures . . .
