Sunrise over Pinantan Lake

When we arrived at Pinantan Lakes Resort last night it was almost dark and getting cold. We were advised to be awake to watch the sun rise over the lake in the morning and quite by chance I woke in time to see a great view of the rising sun lighting up the surrounding trees and houses and mist drifting lazily from the lake surface. It was indeed cold an I think that what was woke me as when I went out to see the sunrise there was a frost on the ground.

Yesterday was a long drive and tomorrow will be an equally long drive too, so today was a day of relaxation. That does not mean doing nothing but more like taking time to enjoy the surroundings. In the morning, with the sun hot but the air cool and refreshing we walked up into the hills above Pinantan Lake having been warned about looking out for bears. We didn't see any but enjoyed the walk with good views over Pinantan Lake and the surrounding country.

After lunch we rented a canoe to paddle around the lake. It was an idyllic afternoon, more bright sunshine in a cloudless blue sky with gentle winds ruffling the lake surface. We glided along the lake shore, admiring the waterfront homes along the water's edge. The settlement of Pinantan Lake is larger than you first thing with many properties scattered around the landscape including its own elementary school.

We spent quite a bit of time gently drifting up on Black Throated Divers (otherwise known as Loons and featured on the $1 coins leading to their nickname of Loonies) and we quite successful, getting to within 10 metres of one bird before he dived from sight. We spent a couple of hours drifting and paddling the lake and more time on the dock soaking in the view and atmosphere while the sun shone in the early evening.

The sun slipped down behind the trees so it was time to retreat back to the RV to escape the cool evening air and enjoy a beer and a glass of wine with dinner. What a day.
