Little Asby Hawthorn
Well, of course I had to go and find one of the trees, didn’t I! Especially as this one is so close to us. A lovely afternoon as we climbed up to the limestone from the road and made our way along a track just below the cliff of rock. This Hawthorn is at 360m and has its roots in between chunks of limestone. Its trunk makes an almost ninety-degree curve as it emerges from the cavity it found long ago. It is usually wild up here – cold and windy. But the views over the Howgills, the Pennines and Eden Valley are wonderful and today, just for a while, it was still and sunny and warm. (But just look at those dark clouds over the hills – it was raining on the way back home.)
despite wind
despite hail
and only this one tree
despite cold
despite rock
and only where roots find earth
