Porvoo railway station
This part of Porvoo is hidden from the tourist mainstream across the river from the old town, and is described as a hidden gem. We had walked backwards and forwards past it twice a day for the last two days, and finally this morning was the opportunity to explore it in more detail, in absolutely brilliant light. In comparison to "abandoned" railway facilities in the UK, it's completely open to the world, and we could potter backwards and forwards to our heart's content, getting up close and personal with the rails and the remaining engines and wagons. In fact, it's not completely abandoned as some freight trains and occasional steam trains do in fact still use the rails.
This was our last piece of exploring, as after that we had to set off for the bus station and the bus back to Helsinki. All worked smoothly and we were back in the apartment within 57 minutes of the bus leaving Porvoo bus station. Porvoo was a great place to celebrate my birthday, but we still feel there are corners we would like to explore further so we plan to go back, even if only for a day trip.
I put an album on flickr.
