The Gate to Nowhere

I have long been mystified by the location of this gate. It stands just a few feet from the little river called Buttermere Dubs which flows from Buttermere lake into Crummock Water. It is always padlocked. There is next to no river frontage to right or left once one has passed through, so I don't think it can be for the use of fishermen. It's a mystery!
