Ronda

A trip to Ronda.

We were last here 21 years ago, and it is much more of a tourist hot spot now. Unsurprisingly, it is a beautiful place with lots of history and some spectacular buildings and views.

The main blip is our view as we sat down for lunch. The vernacular style in the old town is very characteristic.

The extras include a view of the "new bridge" (puente nuevo), which is eighteenth century and enabled people to cross the gorge at a higher point than the roman and moorish bridges (which are still here). It is said that both sides threw prisoners to their deaths from the bridge during the civil war, although this fact seems to have been embellished by Ernest Hemingway in "For whom the bell tolls". Both he and Orson wells were great fans of Ronda (and its bullring).
