Hydnum repandum dots
At last I finally managed to get a decent spore print from a Wood Hedgehog (Hydnum repandum). Unlike most other fungi the Wood Hedgehog has soft spines rather than gills or pores. This image has really surprised me.It seems to mirror almost exactly the under surface of the fungi. Its worth remembering what you are looking at - this is simply a flat print created by tens of thousands of microscopic (approx 6x7 microns) smooth white ellipsoidal spores landing on a sheet of glass. Where the spores are most dense shows up white, less dense is grey. The black is a piece of paper placed underneath the glass. Dots for Abstract Thursday.
