Only the start.....

Wedding handbag and shoes purchased!

I walked down in to Bingley to catch the train to Leeds this morning ahead of the weather front, and went via Betty's Wood in St Ives which is being fell due to infection.  1000 larches and sweet chestnuts will be taken out due to the disease phytophtora ramorum.  The underlying rhododendrons are also being removed (hooray!) as they harbour the disease.  We can't help thinking that if they had cleared all the rhodos when the disease was first identified, then the trees would have been safe, but it's always down to money.

I was shocked to see the logs piled up in one half of the carpark as it brings it home what the clearance will mean when it's done.  On a positive note, they will replant broad-leaved species which younger generations will be able to enjoy in future.
