Inhibitions?
Proof, if proof were needed?
I have, more than once, heard that Supermarkets often treat their veg. with growth inhibitors to prevent sprouting. Which may account for why the odd "Banana shallot" refuses to grow when "planted".
Consider this:-
On the left, a tiny home-grown Spud left on the Kitchen work-top.
On the right a Supermarket spud which has lurked in the darkness of a veg store beneath the same worktop.
If you "chit" your your spuds in light you get fairly short, healthy, shoots.
Do the same in the dark & you get long, straggly, etiolated, shoots.
I put it to you, members of the jury, those tiny, wee, nubbins on the right ought to be massively longer after ≥10-11 months.
