Old sign

This old and curious sign is in a doorway along George IV Bridge in Edinburgh, I walk past it on the way to work. I can make out a few things - 'Protestant Institute of Scotland', 'Scottish Reformation Society', but I can't work out why they are all on top of each other and in such a jumble. If anyone knows the story behind this sign I'd love to hear!
