Trumpan and corncrakes
A brighter start so we headed up to Trumpan at the top of Waternish. A ruin with lots and lots of amazing history and not all pleasant. Read more here http://www.theskyeguide.com/see-and-do-mainmenu-35/42-interesting-places/258-trumpan-church-waternish
You can see the Trial stone on the left which had coins embedded into the crack.
We walked down the lane , through muddy puddles and gate on to the track that lead to Waternish Point. We just walked to the top of the hill and had fine views across to Harris. We could see the ferry returning to Uig. Cows and sheep lifted their heads and gazed at us.
On the way we had watched a buzzard flying and then landing on a post.Geese flew into the field where the Highland cows had been a few days ago.
Returned to the car and drove down to the Village Hall where a Corncrake , cake and coffee event was being held by the RSPB .It was a thank you to the local community who are working hard to create areas that will encourage the corncrakes to return.Shelagh, the Corncrake officer, surveys the area throughout the Summer months by driving around at night time stopping and listening . She only heard one this year, only the male is vocal with it's rasping croak. One local Crofter , Wilma, was telling us about how things have changed in the last 30 years. Explaining that they would 'get fed up with the blooming things ' so many around. You could see them in the fields everywhere on Skye but not now.
The way of crofting has changed greatly with the introduction of tractors, early cutting for silage and the move from cattle to sheep.
The Crofters on Waternish have been very supportive of the project , now leaving the cutting till the 1st September , creating nettle beds and channels of 'weeds' in between the fields.
We had a very tasty tea with super cakes even though we were the only 'outsiders' there.
Afterwards we had a drive down to Roag and there abouts. The clouds had cleared and there were good views of the Cuillin.Came across a mini pirate ship selling eggs :)
