18th century brocade dress
on loan to the National Museum of Scotland, and in their Granton store. It is woven with silver and gold threads and would have cost the equivalent of a year's wages for most normal folk at the time.
There are 12.4 million items in the museum's entire collection, and only about 18,000 on display in their museums. We went on a tour of the Granton store facility (my second visit) which is where everything except the 18,000 are stored and which is fascinating. Extra is a fossil of a tetrapod.
