Blast from the past...
A busy day at work - reports need to be done and dusted in 4 weeks' time - followed by a busy evening. About to start work on our website...
But had a quick look at this farcical publication while MrM was cooking our evening meal - Protect and Survive. Produced in 1980, the booklet was intended for free distribution to every household if the country were ever faced with an immediate threat of nuclear war. Thankfully, it didn't happen. Evidently, being curious, I bought a copy for 50p when it went on sale.
Reminded of it at the weekend when I happened upon a TV programme about how scary TV was in the 1980s. Really? But then I don't remember much about the TV programmes of the time, mainly because I didn't have access to a TV until 1985 and, even then, didn't watch it much. However, looking back, it was quite a scary period to live through - the Cold War in full swing, and (maybe even scarier) the Thatcher era. Maybe I shall re-visit the one political thriller from the 1980s that I do remember - Edge of Darkness. Can't help wondering whether the present time will one day be portrayed as being just as scary, of not more so...
