The Road through the Woods
An ironic title given the source of the quote - Rudyard Kipling's lovely little poem "The way through the woods" which starts :
They shut the road through the woods
Seventy years ago.
Weather and rain have undone it again,
In this case however the road has been upgraded, if that is the word, in recent weeks in preparation for the removal of the first couple of blocks of mature timber, some of which was badly damaged in the gales in early January.
The wood in question is above our house and I had not seen the much expanded road until today. Of course it produces mixed emotions - I know that the rawness will heal and that in a few years it will have faded into the landscape , particularly as the old trees come out and new ones take their place.
But at this point, where a small quarry has been started to take rock for the road, it all seems very different from what were used to on Sunday afternoon strolls up the hill.
