New Toy Gives Grief

I have this on semi permanent loan from a friend who thinks he probably wont need it again. It all worked well until I tried to install the up to date software which stalled halfway through, then nothing would work, the pc wouldn't restart and needed my emergency boot disk + system restore.
It all now seems to work but it's dark and I didn't have a blip, so this is it!
