Drawing on the Past

Dear Diary,

Since I have been somewhat limited in what I can do I decided to do a bit of sketching.  Looking at Tasha Tudor's books yesterday reminded me of how I would, at the end of a class while we waited for their teacher to come, draw for my grade one students.  Mortimer Mouse was their favorite.  I would start a story and they would continue it and I would do my best to sketch it out.  We would continue, week after week, and they never ran out of adventures for Mortimer.

Drawing is like most things, you have to keep up the practice or you get rusty.  I use to be able to draw Mortimer in minutes but now it took me over an hour!  This is Mortimer "deshabille".  (I might mention that I taught in a French immersion school although the specialists were not required to speak exclusively French in their classes.)  The children really liked it when I dressed Mortimer in various costumes.  I've added my sketch of Mortimer in his vest and gold rimmed glasses...quite the dapper mouse!

It was fun spending a couple of hours with my colored pencils and Mortimer.  It must be at least 15 years since I tried bringing him to life.  While there were no children egging me on, I had no trouble entering into that fantasy world where mice have adventures and we join happily in the fun. 

ps...Watch out any real mice that may be about!  Emerson comes home today!!! >(^..^)<
