Black Friday: Another way to spend it
Tivoli tells me that the UK is observing Black Friday, even though they don't observe Thanksgiving. Black Friday is a capitalist creation, made in the USA by marketers. The US Thanksgiving holiday occurs on the third Thursday of November, as a result of which most people have Friday of that week off work...and the proximity of Thanksgiving to the all-time-Number-One capitalist success story, Christmas, means that people can be lured into shopping both for themselves and for others on this day.
However the activists in Don'tShootPortland organized a poster-hanging, chalking holiday today. They called it "Black Lives Matter #NotBlackFriday Not One Dime."
Posters were made by activists participating in a community arts project. I wasn't able to join them for the activity today, but I went over at dusk and photographed what they left behind. I saw many people stopping to read the stories, to look closely at the posters, and to make cell phone photos of the array of posters and chalkings. See Extra to get the long view. The location is the Transit Center where there is a continuing memorial I have blipped before.
