Keeping Tally
Today's been a hectic day, so I've been up against it when it came to thinking of something blip-worthy. However on returning home tonight, I was able to look at something - one of those things you see daily and don't even think about - with fresh perspective.
Our home once used to be a woolshed, and in the course of our rebuild/conversion we tried to use as many elements of the old building if they were both up to be restored and fitted in the overall design.
This old rimu door tongue & groove door was at one time the back door of the woolshed, providing access between the wool press room and the holding pens to the rear. It's covered in old bale tallies, dating all the way back to the 1920's.
Whilst it's one of the few remaining echos of the old woolshed, it's also central to the feel of the new building. Today it serves it's purpose as a door between kitchen and laundry, so it's now in the heart of the home.
This door not only serves as a place to hang all our keys - it's a visual prompt to the building's original purpose. Like the tallies that are etched over it's surface, it stands to remind us of what occured in this building down the years, and for us to never forget it's origins.
Today sees me turning 40, so in many ways the title of today's blip is even more apt. I won't be keeping score on the laundry door though....
