wake up and smell the coffee

Finally - a decent cup of coffee in Milton Keynes.

We’re in town early this morning and come across this small, independent coffee bar.     That’s right - independent - as in not part of a chain.

It’s located in The Hub - the business district of MK, right next to half a dozen or so major restaurants - the sort that you’re bound to have in your town (the extra gives an idea of The Hub).

All their coffee is Colombian - they started off a few years ago as importers - but now have their own coffee shop.  They have business and charitable links with Colombian coffee producers and have a mission to help the country move on from the ravages of the drugs wars.

The place is small and dark - and packed.  Even on a Saturday morning.  When I go to order, I don’t have to explain what a ‘long black’ is because it’s already chalked up on the board.

We manage to perch on the last two available stools, next to an outside window, watching other people come and then turn away.  There are seats outside, but it’s too cold today.

I hope it succeeds; not just because MK is in dire need of independent food and drink outlets, but because they have a really ethical business model.  They’re young and keen.  And that makes my coffee taste even better.
